Centre Hospitalier Universitaire de Saint-Etienne, Loire
Centre Hospitalier Universitaire de Saint-Etienne, Loire
This new extension to an existing hospital is designed to create a distinct identity for the Institute de Cancérologie de la Loire from the CHU de Saint Etienne and Mutualité de la Loire to which it is attached.
The form of the building creates a marked contrast between a soft architecture for the patient areas and a more technological expression for the plateau technique containing the treatment and diagnostic areas of the building. The orientation and form is designed to prevent overlooking between the new building and housing to the south or the existing hospital. Within the plan, generous landscaped patios are provided to open the building to the natural environment and to maximise daylight entering the hospital. Careful attention has also been paid to using the natural slope of the site in order to reduce the bulk of this hospital.
